We hear about millennials all the time, but who are they? They're individuals born between 1981 and 1997, and they're definitely an increasingly influential generation. Definitely this means that small business owners need to understand millennials, how they think, how they act, and how they want to be reached.
Millennials don't have the patience to stand in line, to have things take a long time. So you want to make sure that your customer service is quick and efficient.
A few things I'd recommend, if you have a very small staff, set up at least auto email responders so that when people email you, they get an instant response and know that somebody receives it. And you want to consider that you have someone available that can quickly respond to social media, but also telephone calls, live chat, and traditional email.
Definitely social media's a great way to engage this younger audience. They're on Snapchat. They're on Twitter. They're on Facebook and other platforms. You need to be as well. This doesn't mean you have to be on every platform, but you might want a survey, a poll, questionnaire. You can post the link to the survey on your own social media channels and ask them, "How would you like to be communicated with?"
Another thing to keep in mind as you're leveraging social media, be engaging. Be interactive. Consider using video, photos, a quiz, something that draws in, especially this younger demographic.
When you're writing a blog post or writing post on social media, don't try to be someone else. Don't try to be someone you're not. Write like you're talking to a friend who's right across from you. Be true to yourself, be true to your brand.
Millennials love to find information and research on their own. So what does this mean for your business? This means that when people go to your website, make sure you have a lot of information such as FAQs, so they can find out the information on their own.
Millennials want to buy from brands they know, like, and trust. So make sure your "About" page, your mission statement are updated in order and really showcase who your company is.
So there you have it. Three ways that you can engage and better communicate with millennials by being faster in your customer service, leveraging social media, and enabling them to find their own answers about your products and services.
