Hi. I'm Ed Lawler from the Wells Fargo Business Insight Series. Today we’re talking about how to use visual marketing. Joining me is Ramon Ray, editor of smallbiztechnology.com. Thanks for joining me, Ramon.
Ed, it is an awesome pleasure to be here, and thank you for having me.
There are lots of options for marketing out there. What are some of the benefits of marketing your business visually with photos and videos?
There are a lot of options, and I think some of the options that small businesses can do is one, if you have a brick and mortar business or retail business, photos definitely can serve as an awesome opportunity to welcome people in your store.
I think the second thing is that maybe for those businesses that do not have a face-to-face interaction, they're online businesses, they have a lot of options they can use as well. And I think they can use photos to build trust, and build deeper engagement with people who normally can't walk into their business.
And I think the last thing to realize as we talk about how to use visual marketing is that photos and videos clearly can be shared online. Business owners can use that in the social networks and beyond to share that online.
Sounds great. Those sound like compelling reasons to increase your visual marketing efforts. How can small business owners produce and use photos and videos?
If you're going to take a lot of photos and videos, while your phone is OK, I think purchasing the separate pieces of equipment — a camera and a video camera — is good.
Some of the things that you can do with this is to capture information about your customers. Now of course, you want to get their permission, but Ed, one of the biggest opportunities for small businesses is, "What are your customers saying about you?" So capturing that.
Two, what about your business itself? You know, the physical location. If you have an office or a storefront, especially if it's really cool and looks neat. And I think your products. So whatever you're doing, taking photos of these things, especially as you’re doing it. Ask your customers to submit their own photos as well.
The other aspect of this, Ed, I think is important, is photo editing. Sometimes a photo doesn't come out quite the way you wanted, so you can use a number of photo editing tools to make that photo look better, to enhance it, things of that nature.
Other things to think about is photo albums. You may have a compilation of 50 photos, 100 photos, 3 photos. You can put these into online photo albums, so that your customers and others can more easily find them.
Lastly, is Google Business View, which is a cool thing that especially for physical retail locations, Google can help you show a 360º, kind of a panoramic view of your business. You can walk through the business, the same thing that Google does with Google Maps.
And to round up with a few other tips, don't forget Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest. Your Kinko's or Staples. All these are ways that people can take the video that’s on their smartphone or their video camera or their regular camera, and let other people leverage it.
That's great advice, Ramon. How can you actually tell your business' story with photos and videos?
That's a good question, because just having photos or videos sitting online is not a story about the business. But I think if you blend that into a PowerPoint, blend that into a number of photo sharing tools online that can help you take your audio, take your video, take your text, and people can flip through and see that. So I think that's really the way, over time, that you begin to tell that story.
Captions. Real, real important. Because that will tell people clearly, using the text as well, what the photo is about. Have fun. You don't have to make it so serious and think, "Oh, it's going to be out for my customers or prospects, so it has to be any different." What grabs your attention? That's the kind of thing you want to do to tell your story.
